Fabrik der KünsteWith raw material and color, the Egyptian artist Salama, who has been living in Hamburg for 18 years, moves life between the worlds into his pictures. His painting is cheerful and poetic, celebrating the colorful life in subtle nuances and with violent contrasts. His mummy-like sculptures, on the other hand, show injured figures, wounded and crooked, bloodless and pale, wrestling with each other and with themselves.

The pictures I show here deal with the environmental destruction of modern humans. At the center of my pictures is the person alienated from nature and thus alienated from himself. With my "icons of the present, I would like to point out the time when man and nature lived in harmony. In my work I try to combine the technique of fresco painting with ancient Egyptian symbols. An essential for my art is to use only natural materials and to fall back on a color palette reduced to natural colors.
My pictures are an invitation to the viewer to reconcile with nature.
Without seeking to bring the ancient Egyptian cultural content into the present, fragments of that culture are used to find a visual language appropriate to the twentieth century. The forms of hieroglyphics borrowed from nature are taken as inspiration to build up an image.Salama describes his style of work not as an attempt to conjure up the origin, but also not to entirely renounce it. "Establishing a connection between the eyes of a 20th-century man and the background of a 5000-year history that focuses on the present is also the experimental search for images that detach themselves from space and time and show their timelessness." , notes Salama Mohamed.
In October Salama Mohamed will exhibit his paintings and objects at the Fabrik Galerie. Salama Mohamed was born in 1963 in Alexandria / Egypt. From 1982 to 1986 he studied graphics in Alexandria. After that he came to Hamburg and since then he lives here. In two exhibitions he had previously presented his works together with other artists, this is his first solo exhibition. The images and graphics are, according to his own statements, strongly influenced by elements and symbols from the history of Egypt, which appears again and again in his fantasy and his dreams and therefore find their expression in his works.
